Marvel Studios is famous for its ironclad non-disclosure agreements, but it seems they forgot to brief the soundtrack artists.
During the Los Angeles world premiere of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, singer-songwriter Steve Lacy accidentally dropped a massive spoiler that has sent the MCU fanbase into overdrive. The slip-up has all but confirmed months of speculation regarding Sadie Sink’s top-secret role in the highly anticipated Phase 6 film.
The Red Carpet Slip-Up
The moment happened during the official red carpet livestream. Streamer Valkyrae was interviewing Lacy, whose track “oh yeah?” is featured on the movie’s soundtrack. When asked which character he was most excited to see with a specific warning not to spoil anything, Lacy didn’t hold back.
“Jean,” Lacy responded, causing Valkyrae to visibly react. “I like Jean. She’s the villain, but there’s a reason to her madness.”.
When pressed on whether he had just let a major spoiler slip, Lacy quickly tried to backpedal, stating simply that he liked the character and didn’t know why. But the damage was already done. Within an hour, the clip was plastered across X (formerly Twitter), and Sadie Sink’s name was trending worldwide.
Who is Sadie Sink Playing?
Ever since the Stranger Things breakout star was cast in March 2025, Marvel has kept her character completely under wraps. She was intentionally hidden from the trailers, a move director Destin Daniel Cretton defended by saying there was a “very real reason” to keep her identity a secret.
Fans immediately connected Lacy’s mention of “Jean” to Jean Grey, the iconic, telekinetic X-Men mutant. For over a year, rumors have circulated that Sink would be playing a variant of Grey. Marvel’s official synopsis for the film teases “a powerful villain no one can even see,” which aligns perfectly with a telepathic antagonist.
There is one small wrinkle: the film also features Liza Colón-Zayas as Detective Jean DeWolff. However, in Marvel Comics lore, DeWolff is a police captain and a staunch ally to Spider-Man, making it highly unlikely she is the “villain” Lacy was referring to.
A Brand New Era for Peter Parker
Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits US theaters on July 31, 2026, marking Tom Holland’s first solo outing since the world forgot Peter Parker existed at the end of No Way Home. With MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon) completely unaware of who he is, Peter is operating in total isolation.
If Sink is indeed playing a multiversal or newly awakened version of Jean Grey, her introduction serves as a massive stepping stone toward the rumored X-Men reboot and the upcoming crossover events in Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars.
We won’t know for certain how “mad” this villain truly is until the film drops this week, but one thing is certain: Kevin Feige’s security team is probably having a very long chat with Steve Lacy right now.
